About

à portée is French for within reach. It maps how far the nearest everyday amenities are on foot, including grocery stores, playgrounds, pharmacies and more, for every block in Canada.

Each block is shaded by walking time to the amenities you’ve selected, to match the distance to the farthest one. We take hills and other factors into account.

Portrait of Christian Miles

Hey! I’m Christian Miles, and à portée is the perfect blend of the things I’m interested in: vibrant communities, network maps and interactive data interfaces.

I want à portée to be a helpful resource to all Canadians. I’d love to hear from you if you find it helpful – get in touch.

Amenity data is from OpenStreetMap and, for health facilities, StatCan’s health-facility registry. Block geography is from StatCan too. Amenity data and routing is refreshed monthly, most recently on July 1, 2026, and any issues can be reported here.

Inspired by and indebted to Nat Henry’s close.city and open-source work.
